Prognostic Factors

Feto–fetal transfusion syndrome. Prognostic Factors

Several attempts have been made to identify objective prognostic markers to characterize the severity of FFTS: several factors such as amniotic fluid pressure, percentage of discordance in fetal growth, and visualization of the bladder in the donor have been initially proposed. In 1999, Quintero37 established a classification for FFTS that consists of five stages reflecting different forms of the disease at presentation. This classification helps to homogenize the description of FFTS.

However, it does not inform on the evolution or reflect the dynamic process in this condition. Taylor and co-workers38 tentatively identified three independent factors to predict a poor survival in FFTS managed by amnioreduction: absent or reversed end-diastolic flow in the umbilical artery of the donor; abnormal pulsatility in the venous system of the recipient; and the absence of arterioarterial anastomosis on the chorionic plate.
